## Why Expressions with Negative Exponents Equal their Reciprocals

We are familiar with the rule that for a positive exponent $m$,

$x^{- m} = \displaystyle\frac{1}{x^m}$

and

$\displaystyle\frac{1}{x^{-m}} = x^m$.
