# An Intriguing Number Pattern Problem

Somebody forwarded this math puzzle several days ago. Believe me it is quite challenging, especially for the math majors.  🙂  To those who want to exercise their brain muscles, you may want to check this out.

1. After spending 10 minutes messing aroud with the numbers on excel I now have two options: I can either leave it be now or probably spend a good few hours on it.

Of course I will take neither option and let it linger in my mind for the next few days without any thorough mathematical analysis. Then again, past experience tells me that there’s a high liklihood that it’s one of those problems that requires a different persepective, not a thorough analysis.

I’m now spending time thinking what to do, when I could simply be getting on with it!

2. I don’t like the use of equals signs in this puzzle. That gives a false impression; 8809 does not equal 6 in this puzzle. It would be better to say 8809 –> 6, 7111 –> 0, etc. I think the equals sign in misleading, not to mention wrong.

And, Guillermo, I used a VERY mathematical method to solve this problem. Wasn’t till after I completed my solution that I saw the not very mathematical method to which you refer.

• Hi Patrick. What you say is really true. In fact, it was one of the reasons why it took me a long time to solve it. I should have changed it. Anyway, with that use of the equal sign, it is likely that the creator of the puzzle is not mathematically inclined.
