Geometer’s Sketchpad Essentials 3 – Constructing an Incircle

This is the third part of the Geometer’s Sketchpad Essentials Series. In this tutorial, we are going to construct the incircle of a triangle. In doing so, we are going to learn how to use the Compass tool and construct Angle bisectors.

Step by Step Instructions

1.) Using the Segment tool, construct a triangle.

2.) Select the Text tool and click each vertex to reveal their names. GSP will name the triangle ABC.

3.) To construct the angle bisector of angle A, deselect all the objects, and then click the vertices in the following order: B, A, C (or C, A, B).

4.) Next, click the Construct menu from the menu bar and choose Angle Bisector. This will produce a ray bisecting angle ANow, construct the the angle bisector for angle B.

5.) To intersect the two rays, deselect all the objects, click the two rays, and choose Intersection from the Construct menu. The intersection of the two rays will be the center of our circle.  » Read more

Open Office: A free and excellent alternative to Microsoft Office

I know that a lot of us know about OpenOffice, but there are also many people who haven’t heard about it especially here in our country, and some got used to paying for new versions.  In fact, our institute spends thousands of pesos for commercial software despite alternatives. We have about 80 computers (mostly PCs and a few Macs) and only 3 of them run in Ubuntu (or Linux?) and OpenOffice.

To those who don’t want to spend several hundred dollars for Microsoft Office, OpenOffice is an excellent alternative. Just like Microsoft Office, OpenOffice is a suite that includes a word processor (Word equivalent), a spreadsheet (Excel equivalent), a presentation software (PowerPoint equivalent), database (Access equivalent), a graphics software, and more.  OpenOffice also opens documents created in Microsoft Office, so there’s no problem in switching.

OpenOffice is free, and can be downloaded here. You can learn more about the capabilities of OpenOffice here

GeoGebra Advanced Tutorial 11 – Embedding GeoGebra Applet in WordPress Blogs using the Media Library

Note: This tutorial is for hosted WordPress blogs.  As of this writing, GeoGebra applets cannot still be embedded in WordPress.com blogs.
Instructions
1.) Be sure that you have a WordPress iframe plugin. I use Embed Iframe in embedding GeoGebra applets so I recommend that you use it since I don’t know if the code is similar using other plugins.
2.) Export Your GeoGebra Worksheet as Dynamic HTML. Be sure to take note of the width and the height of your applet. These can found in your Advanced tab of the File Export dialog box.
3.) (Optional): Edit your HTML file using a Text Editor (see how below). Although this is optional, I recommend that you do this.
4.) Go the the Library in the Media panel your WordPress Dashboard and upload your dynamic HTML file.
5.) Once the file is uploaded, click on the Library link again in the media panel to display all the uploaded files and click the file name link of your GeoGebra html file. This will display the Edit Media page. » Read more
