10 Basic Computations You can Do with Wolfram Alpha

In the previous post, I have shared to you the advantages of using Wolfram Alpha. In this post, I am going to list some of the basic calculations that can be done using the same app. Note that you can use these commands both in the iOS version or the web version.

1. Do Basic Arithmetic with Integers, Fractions, and Decimals

150 + 32
1200 – 3
15.8 * 2.5
15/5
1/5*(3 – 8)

2. Compute Decimal Approximation to a Specified Number of Digits

pi to 1000 digits
e to 50 digits  » Read more

Handwrite and Solve Math Equations with Web Equation

Web Equation by Vision Objects is a good math handwriting recognition tool. I have discovered it recently via Stumbleupon. From experience, I think it is slightly better than Windows 7’s Math Input Panel in terms of handwriting recognition.

The page is very intuitive to use. Just use the mouse or a pen to write the mathematical expression on the “yellow zone.” The mathematical expression is recognized and the result is displayed at the bottom of the page.

Mathematical expressions and equations created in Web Equations can be  solved with Wolfram Alpha. Just click the Compute with Wolfram Alpha button. In addition, the Latex and Math ML codes are also generated as you write.

Introduction to the Wolfram Education Portal

Last year, I posted about Wolfram Alpha and the amazing computational document format developed by Wolfram Research.  Recently, Wolfram Research has opened the Wolfram Education Portal, a site dedicated for storing and sharing dynamic teaching and learning materials.  The portal contains free to use electronic textbooks in computational document format,  lesson plans, widgets, and interactive Demonstrations.  According to the website, a practice page with problem generators is currently being developed and will be online soon.

The website has several free sample teaching and learning materials but requires sign-up for full access.

The Wolfram Education Portal is currently in Beta, so I am not sure if the materials on the website will still be for free in the future.
